HOW IT STARTED
Caring Black Men was founded seven years ago with the idea that African American men needed to step up and take responsibility for mentoring young men in our community. We got our start by attending city high school basketball and football games, engaging and conversing with young men. Now, we have evolved into conducting classroom mentoring sessions in 13 of the 22 Decatur Public Schools. We come in contact with 300 young men weekly. We have a presence in the schools Monday – Friday and the young men we mentor range from kindergarten to twelfth grade. The premise of our curriculum revolves around the six pillars of character: trustworthy, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Also, this past year we talked with young men from Millikin University on a weekly basis.
